Can you help identifying a sketch & a watercolor painting?

My wife and I recently bought two small pieces of artwork that we love, but cannot for the life of us decipher the signature on the pieces. Can anyone help us identify the artists, so that we can find out more about them?

The first is a pencil sketch that we purchased in a random market in Bologna, Italy.

The second is a watercolor (and ink) piece that we picked up in an antique shop in Atlanta.

Blog title images variations

Just about the only creative outlet I have these days is the image atop my blogs and I thought I'd post a few variations I considered but ended up nixing in favor of the ones there now.

Here's the image I ended up deciding for my food enthusiast section:

But here are a couple of others I considered putting up there as well. The first one, I just didn't like my background picture as much, especially with all of the fruit stickers.

And the second, well, I still get a kick out of it, so perhaps I may end putting it up at some time in the future.

As you can probably tell, I really like that synthesized 3d look of the text and other objects right now.

Scanwiches

Scanwiches is a photo blog of sandwiches put on a scanner. Under the bluish light, the sandwiches look like some modern photo portraits I've seen.

I think what makes these photos arresting is the subversion of the normal warmth associated with food, especially pushed through so much food porn on the web these days.

This reminds me of the recent attention for Kathryn Parker Alamanas' Pastries Dissected photography series, which blurs this line much much more (into the nearly queasy area)

Paintings parodying North Korea propaganda

There's an article on the NYTimes that features Sun Mu, a painter, who fled from North Korea and now creates painting that parody North Korean propaganda. The above painting features Kim Jong Il in mis-matching Nike track jacket.

I find it a little strange that the NYTimes edition of the article only shows one picture of Sun Mu's painting, while the version in the International Herald Tribune, NYTimes' Global Edition, with the same exact text, features a slideshow of 8 of his paintings. Is there a reason for this?

I'm very intrigued by some of the art coming out of China these days. Case in point, Li Wei: photographer/public performer uses metal wires (ala the wire-fu martial arts movies) to mess with the viewers' sense of gravity.

Mona Lisa

As much as I've seen reproductions of the Mona Lisa, it was simply phenomenal seeing the real thing. Small as it is, up close, the viewer's attention is forced to focus on the face, which is every bit as captivating and mystifying as the numerous descriptions of it say. I wouldn't mind seeing this again.
